Substituting classes for Astryd Farah when necessary:

Dona

Dona has studied and performed Middle Eastern dance since 2001. She was drawn to the complex rhythms, tempo and mood of the music from this region, and has since immersed herself in the study, primarily of classical and modern Egyptian styles.

Dona understands the importance of preserving the music, dance and culture of the Middle East. She seeks to share her love, respect and knowledge of Middle Eastern dance with others. With years of dedication to this beautiful art form, Dona’s constant study has given her both a lovely technique and a wealth of information.

Dona is a thorough and thoughtful instructor who recognizes the importance of a solid technical foundation for movement, and generously shares her knowledge with her students. Her beginning level classes will include instruction on posture, form, technique, isolations, walks, arms and hands, finger cymbals, combinations, shimmies, taksim and introduction to rhythms and musicality.

In addition to teaching and studying, Dona practices and performs regularly with the professional troupe, Ja’La Nour, of Eugene, Oregon.

Lola

Lola fell in love with Middle Eastern dance at her very first lesson, many years ago, and continues to feel joy and inspiration to this day. She studied with Samisha Shami for almost ten years and was a member of the Shami Mir Dance Ensemble. She has also studied locally with Astryd Farah deMichele and attended workshops and classes all over the Western United States and Cairo, Egypt. Workshop instructors include Mona Said, Raqia Hassan, Yousry Sharif, Nagwa Fouad, Mahmoud Reda, Shalaby, Diana Tarkhan, Randa Kamel and many, many others. She loves to study this ancient art form and finds that there is always more to learn.

In addition to studying and teaching, Lola performs regularly in Eugene, Oregon, and is a founding member of Ja’La Nour.

Lola is inspired by the deep musicality and emotional content of Middle Eastern music. Her goal is to express that feeling in her dance, and to share the joy with others through her performance and teaching.
